Backlit view of Pluto landscape from New Horizons

Layers of haze tower above ice mountains and glaciers in this recently released image of Pluto snapped by the New Horizons spacecraft. New Horizons took the picture shortly after its closest approach to Pluto in July, with the landscape backlit by the Sun. The mountains at left tower up to two miles high, while the plain at right is a vast sheet of frozen nitrogen. Wisps of fog are visible near the bottom of the image, where day gives way to night.
